About the Luta Livre

The Luta Livre is a martial art of combat founded in Brazil by Euclydes Hatem dit Tatu. This combat sport is mainly based on the projections and groundings, control systems and submissions of the luta book. This form of combat is characterized by the use of techniques such as joint keys, strangulation, muscle compressions, etc..

In practice, a distinction is made between the Luta Livre esportiva, which is practiced only with fighting techniques for the submission of the opponent, and the Vale tudo, where anything goes.

The Luta Livre: a story of combat

The history of Luta Livre is mainly the story of the confrontation between two styles, Luta Livre and Jiu-Jitsu, and the victory of one fighting style over another. In fact, the Gracie family, the originators of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, were defeated twice by Luta Livre practitioners.

However, Luta Livre became a huge success in Brazil in the 1970s after the Brunocilla's victory over George by Euclides. And this success was reinforced by the publication by Robert Leitão of the theory of Luta Livre, better known as the "Grappling Theory".

Nevertheless, this story is punctuated by many formal and street fights between Luta Livre and Jiu-Jutsu in Brazil. Its export around the world is relatively easy, with its easy integration with MMA, etc.

The Luta Livre: what equipment to wear?

Like all martial arts, Luta Livre is practiced with the right equipment. Whether it is the referee in charge of controlling a fight or the wrestlers, everyone must wear adequate outfits.

As far as the equipment that a Luta Livre practitioner must wear is concerned, we have :

For the top, you must wear a short- or long-sleeved book luta rashguard;
For the bottom, you can either wear Luta Livre combat shorts, grappling shorts, or Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu kimono pants, although there are Luta Livre compression pants available.

As for the protections allowed in Luta Livre, you can have an earmuff, a mouth guard, finger strap, knee pad, ankle pad, etc.
The Luta Livre also has grades ranging from white belt to black belt to yellow, orange, blue, purple and brown belt. The referee's equipment consists of a T-shirt, a polo shirt or a shirt and pants of the shorts type with a uniform colour (black or white).
