The word “Yurei” is a combination of two Kanji (‘yu’ meaning faint or dim and ‘rei’ meaning soul or spirit).
The Yurei is a traditional Japanese ghost, but unlike the Western World’s ghosts, the Yurei has no problem passing through the world of the living and the dead. The Yurei is a horrific figure in Japanese culture and are often less concerned with frightening someone than they are in outright killing them. They cannot be contained or destroyed and have near unlimited power. They act more as a force of nature than a simple vengeful spirit- like a tsunami of evil compare to the simple thunder storm of Western ghosts.
